San Fernando Valley Bioscience Training & Career Pathways

Build a Career That Helps Improve Lives

The medicines, vaccines, and medical tests used in healthcare begin long before they reach a patient. Bioscience studies how living things work. Biotechnology uses that knowledge to develop useful products. Biomanufacturing makes those products safely and consistently. Healthcare professionals then use them to diagnose illness, administer medications, provide treatment, and help patients recover.

Bioscience discovers. Biotechnology develops. Biomanufacturing produces. Healthcare delivers the benefit to patients.

Why Bioscience?

Bioscience includes careers in laboratories, manufacturing, quality control, research, data, engineering, supply chain, and healthcare. The Los Angeles region aims to create 10,000 high-quality life-science jobs by 2030, and LAEDC has reported an average bioscience salary of more than $100,000 a year. Actual pay varies by position, employer, education, and experience.

You do not always need an advanced degree to begin. Employers need people who can follow instructions, work safely, operate equipment, keep accurate records, solve problems, and work well on a team.

What Training Do You Need?

Your training depends on the work you want to do:

  • Short-term certificates teach practical laboratory and manufacturing skills for entry-level work.
  • Associate degrees prepare students for technician positions or transfer to a four-year university.
  • Bachelor’s degrees can lead to advanced technical, quality, research, clinical laboratory, and management positions.
  • Healthcare programs prepare students to use medicines, tests, devices, and treatments while caring for patients.

Save Money with College Promise

Eligible first-time, full-time students at LA Mission, LA Pierce, and LA Valley may receive two years without enrollment fees through the Los Angeles College Promise.

At the current $46-per-unit rate, students can save at least $2,208 over four full-time semesters—or as much as $2,760 while completing a typical 60-unit associate degree. Books and other expenses are separate. Glendale Community College has its own Promise Plus program for eligible students.
