12 Dec Steve Allen “Excellence in Education” Awards Honor Valley Schools, Educators, and Students
SHERMAN OAKS, Calif. – On May 19, 2014 – Seven truly remarkable Californians from our San Fernando Valley, who received national education recognition this year were honored at the 14th annual Steve Allen “Excellence in Education” Awards at our Board of Governors meeting. The awards, named for long-time Valley resident and legendary entertainer Steve Allen, salute nationally recognized achievements in the education field, and are presented annually by The Valley Economic Alliance.
Recipients of the 2014 Steve Allen “Excellence in Education” National Recognition Awards:
Cleveland Humanities Magnet School – LAUSD – National Magnet School of Distinction
The Academy for Enriched Sciences – LAUSD- National Magnet School of Distinction
El Camino Real High School – Independent Public School – First place in the 2014 Annual United States Academic Decathlon awarded by the United States Academic Decathlon Association
CHAMPS Charter School of the Arts – Multimedia & Performing – Independent Public School Spur-Flys, won the 2014 VEX World Championship in the High School Alliance Division
Haywood Hogan – Los Angeles Valley College – Haywood Hogan – Gold Medal winner for Presentation of Poetry at Phi Rho Pi National Speech Tournament
Agoura High School Studio Jazz Band, Las Virgenes Unified School District – Won first place at the National Swing Central Jazz Festival in Savanna, GA
North Hollywood High School – Cyber Patriots Team Azure – First place at the National Cyber Patriot VI Competition
The Business Education Partnership Award is presented to an outstanding business in the community that has partnered with a San Fernando Valley School. This year the award was sponsored by Van Nuys Airport and presented to Lexus of Glendale for their partnership with Herbert Hoover High School (GUSD). “Van Nuys Airport is proud to support the Business Education Awards. The business/education partnerships that take place are not only innovative but also inspiring. We can all learn from this year’s award recipients.” stated Diana Sanchez, Public and Community Relations Director, Van Nuys Airport. Recognizing outstanding educational leaders for their innovative use of science, math and technology in the classroom and community Keyboard Concepts sponsored the “Innovation in Education” Award and this year the recipients were Genein Letford, Music Director, NEW Academy Canoga Park and Kathy Rohrs, Music Director, Chaminade College Preparatory School.
In addition, Dr. Sue Carleo, Retired President of Los Angeles Valley College was recognized with the Champion of Education Award for her dedication to improving education and affecting positive change in the academic community and in the lives of thousands of students and their families.
